Why Smart Companies Process Background Investigations

Why Smart Companies Process Background Investigations

1) Just having a background screening policy can discourage applicants with something to hide.

A person with a criminal record or false resume may simply decide to apply to a company that does not pre-screen. This is becoming an increasingly important issue as more and more candidates are committing resume fraud than ever before. ADP Screening and Selection Service found, in a 2003 survey, that more than 50% of the people on whom it conducted employment and education checks had submitted false information, compared with 40% in 2002. A recent on-line article from CNN (March 11, 2004) further illustrates this problem, as the number of web-sites offering fake degrees or degrees conferred based on “life experience” is growing each year.

2) It limits uncertainty in the hiring process.

Although, using instinct in the hiring process is important, basing a decision on hard facts is even better. Since everyone looks good on paper, the need to research and confirm a potential employee’s background has never been greater. Outsourcing provides impartial fact gathering and, oftentimes, more in-depth information, which may reveal the applicant’s true colors.

3) A screening program demonstrates that an employer has exercised due diligence.

This provides a great deal of legal protection in the event of a lawsuit. Employers can be held responsible for employees who cause harm or damage to others. If a matter turns into litigation, the legal fees for just one incident can easily reach six figures and jury awards can be astronomical. A company can be sued by injured coworkers, members of the public who were damaged, or even the bad employee who may claim wrongful termination.

4) Screening potential employees helps to avoid high turnover and cost of replacement.

Ultimately, the cost of making the right hire pales in comparison to the impact and associated costs of a poor hiring decision. The financial cost to businesses from theft, violence, and false credentials can be enormous. There are other costs that are much harder to measure. Inexact hiring creates excessive turnover, which often leads to decreased productivity, lower morale among coworkers and/or damage to a company’s reputation. Fortune 500 companies estimate the cost of hiring the wrong person to be between two and four times their annual salary, once the time and money spent on advertising and recruiting, hiring, training, and severance pay are taken into account.
